Your First Kickboxing Class: A Beginner's Guide

Nervous about your first class? Don't be. Here's exactly what to expect, so you can walk in relaxed and ready.

By Ty McDuffey · Coach

Almost everyone feels a little nervous before their first kickboxing class, that's completely normal. The good news: it's a lot more welcoming than you think. Here's everything you need to know to show up confident.

You don't need any experience

This is the big one. You do not need to know how to fight, be in shape, or have ever thrown a punch. Most people start with zero experience. Because every session here is private and one-on-one, the whole thing is built around your level, no keeping up with a class, no being the new person in a crowd.

What to wear and bring

Keep it simple: comfortable athletic clothes you can move in, supportive shoes, and a water bottle. That's it. We provide loaner gloves for your first sessions, so there's no gear to buy before you even know you like it.

Will you have to spar or get hit?

No. This is the number-one worry, and the answer is a firm no. Beginners drill technique, footwork, and pad work in a safe, controlled way. Sparring is completely optional and only happens much later, when you want it and you're ready. Nobody gets thrown to the wolves.

What a first session looks like

You'll warm up, then start learning the basics, stance, how to stand and move, and your first punches on the pads or bag. Expect clear coaching, steady encouragement, and a real but manageable workout. You'll probably be surprised how quickly the hour goes by.

Am I too old or out of shape?

Very likely not. We regularly coach people in their 40s, 50s, and beyond, and people who haven't exercised in years. Everything scales to you. Starting where you are is exactly the point, and it's how everyone begins. Curious about the details? Our FAQ covers more.
